Security Licences in New South Wales

Each business must apply for a Security Master Licence. This is for employing up to 3 staff directly involved in sales or installation activities. Fees increase with the number of employees.Cost $410 per annum or $1640 for 5 years, for 3 staff.

Each Sales/Installation person must apply for a "Class 2" B or C Security Licence. Cost $160 per annum/per person, or $650 for five years, per person. There are no formal qualifications required for these two classes. We would suggest you always select both B & C classes, as sales people often go to the site to assist with system set-up and use, and installers frequently sell. You pay the same fee whether two classes are selected or one.

Class 2 licences have subclasses, with each subclass specifying the activity authorised by the licence, as follows:
2A (Security Consultant)
2B (Security Seller)
2C (Security Equipment Specialist)
2D (Security Trainer)

To be granted a Class 2 licence, you must:

  • be 18 years of age or over
  • be a fit and proper person to hold the class of licence sought
  • have the relevant competencies and experience required (Class 2A & 2D)
  • have successfully completed any required training and assessment (Class 2A & 2D)
  • be competent to carry on the security activity to which the licence relates
  • be an Australian Citizen or permanent Australian resident, or hold New Zealand citizenship or a visa that entitles you to work in Australia
(other than a student visa or a working holiday visa)
  • obtain a NSW Driver Licence or Photo Card, or a Customer Number from Roads & Maritime Services (RMS)
  • perform a mandatory criminal history check and have your fingerprints taken (a separate fee of $40 is charged for the taking of fingerprints by NSW Police)
