Security Authorisation in Victoria

In Victoria, there are two categories of security authorisation: licensing and registration.

Security Licences

Victorian businesses who provide any of the following services require a Private Security Business License:

  • Security Guarding
  • Crowd Control
  • Investigation
  • Body guarding
The employees of these businesses must hold a Private Security Individual Operator Licence in order to perform the the tasks listed above. It is specified in the Private Security Act 2004 that an applicant is required to have successfully completed any approved training requirements or have previous experience approved by the Chief Commissioner to be eligible for a licence.

It is recommended that end-users should only utilise the services of an alarm monitoring business if the business is licensed in Victoria under the Private Security Act 2004.

Security Registration

Both businesses and employees are eligible for a private security registration. Under a Private Security Business Registration or Private Security Individual Registration, an applicant can perform security equipment installation and offer security advice.

It is suggested that end-users should only use the installation services of a business if the business is registered in Victoria under the Private Security Act 2004.
