Security Licences in the Northern Territory

Security employers are required to hold a Private Security Firm Licence if they provide crowd control, security officing or private security services. This includes sole traders, partnerships and corporate entities. The application process requires the applicant to identify the corporation's officers in the following roles:

  • Director
  • Secretary
  • Executive Officer
  • Individual involved in the corporation's management
  • Individual who can control or substantially influence the corporation's affairs

Employees of businesses who are active in the security industry must hold one of 3 licences. All private security officers and crowd controllers must have successfully completed the appropriate competency- based training required to obtain a license, as well as meet a standard of probity enforced by the Northern Territory Government.

  • Private Security Officer Licence
  • Crowd Controller Licence
  • Combined Crowd Controller & Private Security Officer Licence

A training course is required for applicants who wish to become a licenced security officer or crowd controller in the Northern Territory. Training can only be delivered by a registered training organisation. If an individual is offered work before they have completed their training, the applicant may apply for a provisional licence.
